12 Folds for Freedom

Posted on May 30, 2010 by ThePeachy1 in It's Juicy
Memorial Day respect for the United State Military

To the ones in uniform, to the ones who love them.  There is no thanks big enough to express my gratitude.  The sacrifices, the missed holidays and milestones.  The physical, emotional and yes financial sacrifice made by those military families is remarkable. Usually handled with grace and honor.  Fighting even for the right of someone they disagree with to have a voice.

Now a roll call ..

My High School Best friend Dan K.   Marines. Desert Storm

2 of my brothers were in the military-  Army and Airforce.

2 of my nephews in the Military 1 in basic and 1 on his deployement to the desert.

My cousins husband on his fourth deployment to the desert.

My husband is retired from the USAF

My father is a Veteran and retired USAF

4 Uncles out of 5.  US Military service and all veterans.

My Grandfather US Mounted Calvary ( one of the last)

My Great Grandfather WWI, died, and in turn my Grandmother was an orphan and only found out 4 months before she died, why and where he was buried, she also received an honorary  reception for him, along with his medals and a letter from the President. It let her leave this planet in peace.

And yes I have ancestors from both sides of the civil war.

I raised my children to know the pledge of Allegiance, to stand when the anthem is sang, and to hold doors for people wearing a uniform or a Veterans hat.  In my family you are raised to understand what it means that someone is actually willing to leave their family and loved ones, to experience unspeakable horrors, to be realistically offering their life up for this country, it’s flag and the people here.  Right or wrong, color or creed, no matter the religion or political stance, they defend us.  Our right to freedom.

I see these families struggle as the parent left behind becomes an only parent and the children suffer with worry and stress.  I see them budget and do without because for some reason this job, the job that actually keeps our country being our country is not paid enough.  A couple years in a row when my daughter was younger and at home, we would baby sit free of charge for military moms, so they could go Christmas shopping without having to pay for daycare because their spouses were overseas.

Living by a military base, we always invite unknown young military people far from home often for the first time, to our home for the holidays to be with our family.  It’s the least we could do, they are willing to die for us, so yes please eat some of my turkey?  Hardly a fair trade.

If this post sounds preachy, well  it is.  This subject is ingrained within my blood, and into the blood of my children.  I think far too many take it for granted.  How many generations of families were ripped apart, or suffered for someones right to protest,  to start a business, or to break the laws of this country and not spend eternity in a jail cell with no civil rights or due process.   So when I see a soldier I say thank you.   Today for Memorial weekend. I want it to reach beyond the scope of people I may run into face to face. I want every child, mother, spouse, brother, sister, and aunt to know,

It is the military and their families, that make this country what it is, not the Politicians.   I thank you.

I have 3 Flag Cases in my house. and if your not familiar with these, it’s what you get when your loved one who served and fought has died, they cover the casket in a flag, OUR flag. Then with precision and snaps, they lovingly fold the flag into a triangle and give it to the family.  No one wants this honor.  We always want the loved one.

Folded American Flag presentation

Every movement, every fold stands for something. Nothing is random.

Now for the meaning behind each fold of the flag they hand to the loved ones.

The first fold is a symbol of life.

The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.

The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our country to try and attain peace throughout the world.

The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in times of war for His divine guidance.

The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, “Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but, it is still our country, right or wrong.”

The sixth fold is where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisble, with liberty and justice for all.

The seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag from all enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.

The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor mother, for whom it flies on Mothers Day.

The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood; for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.

The tenth fold is a tribute to the father, for, he too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born.

The eleventh fold in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob.

The twelfth fold in the eyes of a Christian citizen represents an emblem of eternity, and glorifies in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding us of our nation’s moto, “In God We Trust.” After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the solders who served under General George Washington, and the sailors and marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges and freedoms we enjoy today. There are some traditions and ways of doing things which have a deep meaning.

Thank you to all those that make this country wonderful and safe.

My Coast

Posted on May 28, 2010 by ThePeachy1 in It's Juicy, The Peachy Tree
My son draws a heart to protect the beaches from the oil spill

There is no funny Friday today,  in lieu of the Deepwater Oil Spill and the “Love the Gulf Coast Blog Carnival ” going on this weekend,  I have some things to tell you about My Gulf Coast.

My Gulf Coast is beautiful. My water isn’t aqua blue with huge white waves.

My gulf coast is filled with 27 miles of white sandy beaches, it’s the longest man made beach in the United States.

The Gulf Coast isn't a location it's in your blood.

My Gulf Coast is chalked full of history both good and bad.

A collage of the Mississippi Gulf Coast

Historical sites, and the home of so many artists, the beauty of the Coast inspires all.

My Gulf Coast is overflowing with people as warm as the sun that shines so brightly you wince your eyes.

Welcome to the Coast yall come back now.

My Dad, welcomes all and helps everyone it's the way you treat company.

My Gulf Coast is where my brother took me when I was 17 to throw a bottle into the ocean with a good bye poem I had written for my friends that had died just after graduation.  He held my hand while the sun came up.

I learned to grieve here.

My Gulf Coast is where I took a moon lit stroll with a boy just like out of the movies.

The Biloxi lighthouse, has stood thru it all since 1848

My Gulf Coast is where all 3 of my children flew their first kites.

My son learns to fly a kite on the gulf coast

yes honey, you are doing it.

My Gulf Coast is has seen change as Casinos and big business learned to co exist with the families that had founded and built the community thru fishing and seafood.

My Gulf Coast picked it self up time and time again after mother nature dealt it’s deadly blows.

We help each other, that's what we do on the Coast

Flag on Roof in Camille rubble

We stayed strong, we helped each other.

My Gulf Coast didn’t blame the Government or scream for media, we were too busy helping each other,  those who had little left were so grateful they shared it with those who had nothing.  There were no strangers on My Gulf Coast, everyone helped everyone.  This was mother nature.

Biloxi Ocean Springs Bridge after Katrina

My son stares in disbelief of our all our bridges destroyed.

My Gulf Coast built a memorial, to those who suffered, to those that lost what can’t be replaced and to pay respect for all those who helped My Gulf Coast.

Hurricane Katrina Memorial in Biloxi Mississippi Towne Green

Extreme Home Makeover helped us build the memorial, there were too many homeless to build a house.

My Gulf Coast is full of survivors. My Gulf Coast cares.

My Gulf Coast turned tragedy into beauty.

Dayton Scoggins carves dolphins from the dead trees

Chainsaw Artist Dayton Scoggins turned our dead trees from Katrina into beauty.

Thursday I got this years Hurricane Predictions from the national weather service. I cried.  We have had an oil spill 11x’s that the size of the Exxon Valdeez for over a month now.  My coast is strong, but this is strong also, my coastal people are resilant but could we take another hurricane on top of this spill?

I took my  9 year old to gather some memories, I wanted him to have a chance to see My Gulf Coast again before things change, and remember it.

We drove 15  of the 27 miles, we looked at the nesting sanctuaries, we looked at the unseasonably empty beaches, then we talked about the spill.

My son asked questions I could not answer, what would be the fate of the dolphins, the cranes, the families that fish to take care of their children.

Being 9, he did only what was within his power.

my son drawing hearts in the sand at Biloxi Beach

without a word he started drawing hearts in the sand

I asked him what he was doing to My Gulf Coast.

My son said, “I will draw hearts along the coast, to protect the animals, the water, the sand. ” Love is really strong mom.”

little boy drawing hearts in the sand

He placed these hearts along the beach.

My son then asked me, ” Mom, where are the grown ups, why are they letting this happen, where is everyone?”

I had no answer for my son, other than this is OUR Gulf Coast, and we will love her.

thinking at the waters edge

We love you Gulf Coast

I am all at once saddened and deeply touched by yet another blow My Gulf Coast has to endure, this one is sadly not a force of nature but a force of man. I am touched by the love people are showing the coast from all over the world.  With this post I am joining the,  “Love the Gulf Blog Carnival ” and you can read real blogs with real journalist and real photographers by simply scrolling thru some of them on the link below.

Breaking and Entering Fairy

Posted on May 27, 2010 by ThePeachy1 in FaceBook Fun
You can actually buy one of these at http://www.enchanteddoorways.co.uk/

So the other day my entire post was about how my friends had turned my personal status message into something way far off track. My friends do this to every post every day, in fact my entire blog could be about it.   But what is so cool is something you may or may not know depending on who you are, I have all these groups of friends,  HS friends, College friends, old work friends,  family friends, kids parents friends, and the catagories keep going on and on. Then I have this really tight knit group of freaks dear friends that I don’t really know all that well in real life but am quite sure in a  we all served jail time together in a previous life.

One of my greatest pleasures is seeing what they will inevitably do on my wall.  Not only are they flipping hilarious but they are smart, ok wait, I may need to retract that after this post.  See I have a friend who I will refer to as TW.  We met online when a mutual friend of ours had a real life emergency and we both commented on that friends wall about crying. ( I think I actually told her the story of how I cried about a lizard falling off my french doors and I collapsed on the deck balling my eyes out. It wasn’t the lizard, it was the friend, it’s called transference or something, that’s what Sam said.)  Anyway we became friends and started talking on the phone, skype, she visited on her way thru  my lovely state and we even met in the big easy for a Girls night out.  (They are still trying to  straighten the place back up, sorry NOLA.)

So anyway this friend in question is like a cyber cop, you post something she finds out the answer, she is a partner in a successful real estate company  in Texas ( hit me up if you need a good realtor in TX cause she rocks).

So with all that said, you know there’s a but coming right?  Well she’s this cutie patootie olive skinned dark haired doll baby – to the eye…

BUT- to the brain, she is full on BLONDE.  Oh yeah, not even kidding.

Exhibit A-  on her facebook under notes there is one titled.

“Just thought I would keep this one in case I ever need to laugh again”

yes, she actually left herself a public note on facebook just “in case” she ever “needed to laugh” again.  Like EVER?    Now in real life she has this awesome laugh that is so real and so contagious it’s like listening to a rainbow  machine gun that shoots out bubbles.   But just the header on the file made me laugh.   Then I saw this.

Exhibit B-

Sunday, May 24, 2009 at 12:24pm

(her name)  So I’m up at the schoool & I get into my truck, put the key in & it won’t turn! I know it sticks so I giggle the steering wheel and try and try, call John and tell him I am having trouble…and as I am talking to him I notice a few things in the truck I don’t recognize & start asking him when did you get this & that ..he is like I don’t know what your talking about.. then I realize I AM IN THE WRONG TRUCK! LOL

WOW… just wow…  but it could happen right? (did you notice she “giggled” the key?)  told ya so..

EXHIBIT C – The comments seal her fate….

(HER NAME) You know those Black Suburbans all look alike and everyone in Texas drives one. Although I happened to be sitting in a Yukon at the time! lol

double wow, ok not even the same make or model vehicle?  wow.

and EXHIBIT D- this aint this little ladies first Breaking and Entering rodeo.

Nobody saw me! lol Also reminds me of the time when I was little we lived in a apartment building, kind hotel style with floors and a elevator. One day I walked into my apartment sat down looked around and realized I was in the wrong apartment! I left and nobody ever knew I was there either…

I rest my case..

We now know who the breaking and Entering Fairy is…  and we also know she is harmless and hilarious…
